CANCEL – KIDS Triathlon – Saturday, June 30.
Parents and kids, we have made the difficult and disappointing decision to cancel the KIDS triathlon this Saturday – June 30. We do not believe any risk to the safety of the children is worth producing the event – and given the circumstances, we can’t guarantee there will not be some risk. All participants will receive a FULL refund – and, our sincere apologies for any inconvenience this may cause. And, to the kids, we are very sorry that we are not able to offer you this awesome experience where you get the chance to grow as a young person and fill yourself with self-esteem.
We are frustrated on many levels – but primary because this decision could have been avoided.
We learned yesterday that the High School was under contract with Spartina 449 to host their annual warehouse sale for Friday through Sunday. This Spartina Sale brings thousands of people (and thousands of vehicles) to the roads that we use for the triathlon. We learned of this conflict via a response from the School from one of our pre-event emails reminding them of the triathlon and the schedule of Saturday. After thoughtful and considerate discussions with Spartina 449 regarding the scale of their event, the parking and road usage of their attendees, and the schedule of their event – we did not come to a workaround or alternative that would have guaranteed the safety of the children. I really appreciate Spartina 449 for taking the time to discuss options with them – and, they were disappointed with this conflict as well.
Frustration was heightened when we learned through our discussions with Spartina 449 that their agreement with the High School was set back in the summer of 2017. We communicated to the School our 2018 event dates on October 24, 2017 and asked if there were any conflicts. So they knew of their agreement with Spartina when we inquired with them regarding the dates for the KIDS triathlon. Yet, we never heard back from the School – so we moved forward with our planning. We produced the first of the 2 events back on May 12 and communicated with the School through out the lead up to that event. Despite having produced the KIDS triathlons twice a summer for the past 4 years – same course, same facilities – we never heard from the School regarding any conflicts on the June 30 date – until yesterday – 5 days prior to the event.
Unfortunately, in just 5 days we do not have time to secure another venue, re-schedule the volunteers, and do all the necessary preparations that go into to creating a great experience for the kids. So, we have made the disappointing decision to cancel the event. All participants will receive a FULL refund – and, our sincere apologies for any inconvenience this may cause. And, to the kids, we are very sorry that we are not able to offer you this awesome experience where you get the chance to grow as a young person and fill yourself with self-esteem.
